“You can have  it all, just not all at the same time,”

Being a working mother is not a one-time decision. Neither is the way you organize your work-life balance. As your children get older, your profession progresses, and your family's demands change, you'll need to change course to find a solution that works for everyone. That's natural and healthy — and necessary for long-term enjoyment in various areas.

Because of gendered expectations of women's caring obligations, colleagues and bosses anticipate mothers will put their careers on hold...so they give them less chances or projects, discount their work, or condemn them for leaving early to pick up their children.

The first step is to clarify what balance means to you and avoid comparing yourself to others. Assume you have a large job with many duties. That probably means you won't be able to pick up your children from school or attend some of their activities, but that doesn't mean you're a horrible mother.

The final truth is that your definition will differ depending on your employment, your support, your desires, and priorities. The ideal equation for you and your family will most likely differ from that of your neighbor. This may alter when your career changes and your children get older. Everything is fine. Continue to redefine balance and be open and honest with your spouse about your needs, desires, and degree of happiness.
