Reducing the stigma & pain of hearing loss disability
Show Notes

The phrases "hearing impaired," "hard of hearing," "deaf," and "deafened" are frequently misunderstood, both in meaning and propriety of use. The phrase "hearing impaired" refers to those who have any degree of hearing loss, from slight to profound, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many deaf or hard of hearing people prefer the labels "deaf" and "hard of hearing" because they are more positive than "hearing impaired," which indicates a deficit or that something is wrong that renders a person less than whole.

OUR GUEST:  Teresa Barnes, RN a former ED manager has a 57 dB hearing loss since birth and is advocating for Hearing Awareness. She understands the nuisances of this health and social condition, both personally and professionally.  Working to change the values of corporations towards those with hearing loss for greater inclusion, equality, productivity, retention, communication, and safety. Giving visibility to hearing loss and reducing stigma, so no other child or adult has to experience the pain she did, not being understood with this disability. The Hearing Friendly Symbol for safety, inclusion, visibility, and awareness was created and has evolved.
